Sir Alex Ferguson, the legendary former Manchester United manager, has been excluded from entering the club’s dressing room at Old Trafford following matches. This decision comes after Ferguson was removed from his £2.61 million global ambassadorial role, a position he had held since stepping down as manager 11 years ago. The move is part of a cost-cutting programme initiated by INEOS, the club’s new part owner, led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
Ferguson, who will no longer receive his ambassadorial salary after this season, was informed of the changes during a face-to-face meeting with Ratcliffe. Additionally, a new policy now restricts access to the dressing room, and while United denies banning Ferguson outright, there is a collective understanding about who is permitted inside. This marks the end of a long tradition at Manchester United, where prominent figures like Ferguson, David Gill, Mike Edelson, and Sir Bobby Charlton would regularly visit the players after games.
Though Ferguson’s ambassadorial role will cease, he is expected to remain a non-executive director at the club.
