Seplat Energy reaffirmed its leadership of gender equality in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) to open up more opportunities for women.
The company so pledged at the Society of Petroleum Engineers Women Leadership Lecture Series (SPEWLLS) 2025, whose theme was “March Forward: Advancing Equity and Creating Opportunities in STEM and Beyond.”.
Lagos event brought together industry legends, revolutionaries, and young professionals to join in a joint call for increased women participation in STEM.
Addressing her keynote address, Seplat Energy Plc chief finance officer, Eleanor Adarelegebe addressed the stark gender disparity in STEM, even more in the oil and gas sector where women occupy only 15 per cent of junior roles and fewer still make it to leadership roles. “We are laboring diligently here at Seplat Energy to fill these gaps with mentorship and sponsorship initiatives tailored to assist women at the early to mid-stage in their career levels,” added Adarelegebe.
Through our provision of counseling on bridging cultural differences, we create a facilitative setting in which female professionals can optimize their performance in STEM. Five out of our 14-member board and four out of 12 members on our senior management team are presently women. That is proof positive of the achievements of our mentorship programs as well as Seplat’s outstanding advancement of females in STEM.
She ended with a reaffirmation of the call to action together stating: “Driving gender diversity in STEM requires everyone’s effort particularly leaders, men and women to build a more inclusive and innovative workforce.”
This was preceded by an insightful panel discussion with thought leaders in the industry, one of whom is Chioma Afe, Director of External Affairs and Social Performance, Seplat Energy, who stressed the need to encourage young girls to pursue STEM education as well as get female role models in front of them so as to influence the next generation.
“Innovation flourishes in inclusive cultures that value multiple ideas,” she said. “If we’re going to create a fully inclusive industry, we need to begin advocacy at the grassroots level, inspiring girls who are in primary school to take STEM career paths
Shattering cultural walls, Afe underscored male allyship. “Men today occupy most leadership roles women are eager to seize. Their sponsorship is attributed with the creation of inclusive workplaces. But women also need to learn the skill of breaking such barriers,” she argued.
She again reaffirmed Seplat’s gender equality vision stating that the organization ensures all points of view are heard in taking a decision. She highlighted some of the key initiatives such as the Seplat Women Awesome Network, a formalized mentorship system for women professionals, and achieving a 40 per cent female representation target for university undergraduate students with high academic achievements. She also highlighted the Seplat Teachers’ Empowerment Programme that has empowered over 1,300 teachers, 60 per cent of whom were women in Delta and Edo states. She culminated on a victorious note setting a landmark milestone Seplat’s historic appointment of its very first female Managing Director for its Eastern Asset.
