Tragedy has struck the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) again as one of its officials, identified only as Sylvanus, was found dead on a Lagos street. The official’s lifeless body, dressed in traditional attire, drew attention from onlookers who identified him through his EFCC identification card.
“Where e dey work, nah EFCC. His ID card dey there,” bystanders, including a police officer, were heard saying at the scene.
When contacted, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed the incident in a brief text message, stating simply that “The death is being investigated.”
This marks the second death of an EFCC official in just two weeks. Earlier this month, the anti-graft agency lost Aminu Sahabi Salisu, who was fatally shot by an alleged internet fraudster, Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu, during an operation in Awka, Anambra State.
The suspect was later caught hiding in a neighbor’s ceiling. In recognition of Salisu’s sacrifice, EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede announced on Saturday that the administrative block of the EFCC Academy in Karu, Abuja, would be named after him.
During the Annual Rewards and Recognition Ceremony, Olukoyede emphasized the importance of honoring Salisu’s memory, saying, “We are saddened by the loss of our officer while on official assignment. He was a gallant officer and to this effect, the administrative block of the Academy is hereby named after him.”
Salisu, the first victim, was laid to rest in his home state of Sokoto following the tragic incident in Awka.
