The Abia Eye Health Management Bureau Administrator, Betty Emeka-Obasi, has said that routine eye checkups are the best approach to the prevention of glaucoma.
Speaking at this year’s World Glaucoma Week in Umuahia, with the theme “Let’s Beat Invisible Glaucoma,” Emeka-Obasi stated that early diagnosis is the best way to manage the disease and prevent permanent vision loss.
She said that the bureau has partnered with local government mayors in Abia State to have a three-day outreach program from Wednesday, March 12, to Friday, March 14. The activity will give out free eye screening, medication, and prescription eyeglasses to indigents.
Emeka-Obasi also commended Governor Alex Otti for his initiative towards the improvement of healthcare services, particularly vision care. She urged people to take advantage of the outreach and put eyesight first since glaucoma remains a leading cause of blindness globally.
