The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has disclosed that each of the 109 senators occupying legislative seats in the red chamber earns a total of ₦1,063,860 in salary and allowances per month.
In a recent statement, RMAFC Chairman, M. B. Shehu, provided this clarification following a statement by Mr. Shehu Sani, a former Senator of the Federal Republic, who claimed that each senator collects a monthly running cost of ₦13.5 million in addition to the ₦750,000 monthly salary prescribed by the Commission.
Shehu emphasized that RMAFC lacks the constitutional authority to enforce compliance with the proper implementation of the remuneration package for lawmakers, noting that this issue is currently being addressed by the National Assembly.
The commission provided a breakdown of the monthly earnings for each senator: Basic Salary – ₦168,866.70; Motor Vehicle Fuelling and Maintenance Allowance – ₦126,650.00; Personal Assistant – ₦42,216.66; Domestic Staff – ₦126,650.00; Entertainment – ₦50,660.00; Utilities – ₦50,660.00; Newspapers/Periodicals – ₦25,330.00; Wardrobe – ₦42,216.66; House Maintenance – ₦8,443.33; and Constituency Allowance – ₦422,166.66.
Shehu further clarified that some allowances are regular, being paid consistently with the basic salary, while others are non-regular and disbursed as due. He explained that certain benefits, such as Furniture Allowance (₦6,079,200.00) and Severance Gratuity (₦6,079,200.00), are provided once per tenure. Additionally, Vehicle Allowance (₦8,105,600.00) is optional and is treated as a loan that must be repaid before the senator leaves office.
He also noted that apart from the president, vice president, senate president, and speaker of the House of Representatives, public and legislative officers no longer receive housing provisions, which was previously standard practice.
This clarification came in response to comments made by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who recently criticized lawmakers in both chambers of the National Assembly (NASS) for allegedly determining their salaries and allowances. Obasanjo described it as “immoral” for federal lawmakers to set their remuneration and argued that this responsibility should lie with the RMAFC.
In response to Obasanjo’s remarks, Senate spokesman Yemi Adaramodu challenged anyone with credible evidence to present contrary facts. He described any suggestion that the National Assembly fixes its salaries as “uncharitable and satanic,” asserting that the red chamber only receives the salary allocated to it by the RMAFC, in accordance with the constitution.
