The Chairman of the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), Mohammed Bello Shehu, has refuted reports claiming that the commission opposes the executive tax reform bills currently before the National Assembly.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, Shehu dismissed the allegations as “false and malicious,” clarifying the commission’s stance on the reforms. “I am here to categorically debunk this report as not only false but also malicious,” he stated.
Shehu explained that the RMAFC has been an active participant in the tax reform process and has submitted a comprehensive memorandum emphasizing adherence to global best practices. “Our stance aligns seamlessly with Mr. President’s vision for a more equitable and sustainable fiscal framework,” he said.
The proposed tax reform bills, particularly the Value Added Tax (VAT) allocation and derivation issues, have sparked heated debates in recent weeks. Despite the controversies, Shehu praised President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to repositioning Nigeria’s revenue base and tackling fiscal challenges.
“These reforms represent a significant step toward integrating untapped revenue sources, enhancing Nigeria’s revenue-to-GDP ratio, and improving the nation’s fiscal performance,” he added.
Shehu reaffirmed the RMAFC’s support for the administration’s bold initiatives and its shared goal of creating a more robust and sustainable fiscal system for Nigeria.
