Rep. Andy Ogles Proposes Constitutional Amendment to Allow Trump a Third Presidential Term

Trump

Tennessee Republican Congressman Andy Ogles has introduced a proposal to amend the U.S. Constitution, aiming to allow former President Donald Trump to serve a third term in office. Ogles stated that the country needs “the bold leadership our nation so desperately needs,” referring to Trump’s presidency.

The proposed amendment, unveiled on Thursday, January 23, reads:
“No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than three times, nor be elected to any additional term after being elected to two consecutive terms, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.”

The 22nd Amendment currently prohibits U.S. presidents from serving more than two terms, but Ogles believes this restriction should be reconsidered.

“President Trump’s decisive leadership stands in stark contrast to the chaos, suffering, and economic decline Americans have endured over the past four years,” Ogles stated. “He has proven himself to be the only figure in modern history capable of reversing our nation’s decay and restoring America to greatness, and he must be given the time necessary to accomplish that goal.”

Trump’s Prior Comments on a Third Term

Trump previously joked about running for a third term during a meeting with House GOP lawmakers following his 2024 presidential election victory. Speaking to the group, he quipped, “I suspect I won’t be running again, unless you do something. Unless you say, ‘He’s so good, we have to just figure it out.’”

House Republicans dismissed the comment as humor. Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) remarked, “That was a joke. It was clearly a joke.” He added that he had predicted headlines exaggerating the remark, jokingly suggesting, “Trump trying to thwart the Constitution.”

Ogles’ Praise for Trump’s Leadership

Ogles, a member of the House Freedom Caucus, also highlighted Trump’s executive actions since taking office earlier that week. These include orders addressing the southern border, energy production, and the United States’ withdrawal from the World Health Organization.

“In just a few short days, President Trump has already taken action to undo the catastrophic policies of the Biden Administration and put the United States back on the path to strength and prosperity,” Ogles said.

While the amendment faces significant constitutional hurdles, it reflects ongoing support within some Republican circles for Trump’s leadership and policy agenda.
