Nigerian artist Reekado Banks has finally explained why he left Mavin Records in 2018, revealing that he now believes he made the move too early in his career.
Speaking in a recent interview, the singer behind hits like “Katapot” clarified that his departure wasn’t due to any conflict with Don Jazzy or other label executives.
Instead, it was a personal choice he made after his contract had already expired.
“It wasn’t a conflict situation. I was pretty young and pretty fixated on what I wanted to do—I wanted to leave,” Reekado explained.
The artist revealed that while his original Mavin contract was for three years, he stayed an additional two years without renegotiating terms.
After five years total with the label, he decided it was time to start his own record company, Banks Music.
Looking back, Reekado admits the timing wasn’t ideal. “My contract had ended two years prior.
I signed a three-year contract and allowed it to ride for another two years. So, I was there for five years without reviewing the contract,” he said.
“When it was time, I thought I could do it now. I just embarked on the journey—as many people would view it—prematurely. As soon as I jumped into the sea, I realized how premature it was.”
