Ramadan Must Bring Permanent Change, Not Ceremonialism – Abia Chief Imam

The Abia State Chief Imam, Sheikh Ali Ukiwe, has urged Muslims to take the lessons of Ramadan outside the fasting period, insisting that it should not be considered a ceremonial religious exercise but the foundation for permanent individual and societal change.

In a Umuahia speech, the state capital, Sheikh Ukiwe urged Muslims that during Ramadan, one must seek forgiveness, become better, and renew morally.

“If in the past we have encountered crises, enmity, or prejudices, this is the time for change. We should strive for a better society that is full of love, oneness, peace, and understanding,” he added.

The Muslim learned scholar, originally from Abiriba, reiterated that returning to sinful behavior during Ramadan is opposite to its cause.

“It has to be after Ramadan that not only are we better individuals, but we’re more loving, more helpful and more committed towards creating a surrounding of peace,” he further posited.

During the forthcoming Eid festival, Sheikh Ukiwe acknowledged the current economic downturn but encouraged Muslims to celebrate in appreciation, making use of whatever they possess.

“Albeit the economy might be tough, we should be thankful to Almighty Allah for bringing us thus far, he said.”.

He appealed to the Muslim Ummah of Abia to hold on to spiritual discipline during the month of Ramadan and let the teachings shape their daily lives and activities.
