Tension was high in Akure, Ondo State, as protesters who were enraged by the murder of five farmers by armed herdsmen at Aba Oyinbo in Akure North LGA shut down the Governor’s Office at Alagbaka.
The attack, which occurred early on Wednesday, is the latest in a series of violent incursions against farmers in the area. Tired of the government’s perceived inaction, protesters broke into the Governor’s Office, carrying with them the bodies of the victims in a dramatic display of their outrage and grief.
The mayhem also grounded traffic on Akure/Owo Road to a halt, as protesters marched towards Ogbese, blockading the highway and trapping commuters.
The attack came barely two weeks after a similar incident in the same local government, where 20 farmers were killed in four different farm settlements. The escalation of violence has stirred fear among residents and heightened calls for beefed-up security in the state.
