Temitope Ajayi, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Bola Tinubu, has drawn a comparison between Nigeria’s 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Ajayi made the comparison in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on September 11, following the U.S. presidential debate between Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.
During the debate, Trump and Harris clashed on a range of issues, from abortion rights to immigration, as they vied for voter support in a closely watched election.
In his post, Ajayi likened Obi to Trump, suggesting that both use provocative language to make their points and energize their supporters. “Peter Obi is the Nigerian version of Donald Trump.
Like Obi, Trump will use the most negative epithets imaginable to describe a country he wants to lead again just to make a point and rile up his base,” Ajayi wrote.
He also commented on the debate performance, noting that Kamala Harris effectively countered Trump.
“Kamala Harris prosecuted Trump very well in their first face-to-face debate last night.
She convincingly won the debate and demonstrated her capability,” Ajayi said. He highlighted that Harris skillfully exploited Trump’s weaknesses, leading him into traps.
According to fact-checkers, while Harris made one incorrect claim, Trump was reported to have made 33 false claims during the 90-minute debate.
