Premier League referee David Coote has been dismissed by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) following a thorough investigation into multiple allegations of misconduct.
The 42-year-old official was suspended by the PGMOL last month after a video surfaced on social media showing him allegedly making derogatory remarks about Liverpool and the club’s former manager, Jürgen Klopp.
Shortly after, another clip emerged showing Coote appearing to snort a white substance in a hotel room during the 2021 Euros. These revelations prompted UEFA to suspend him from officiating European matches.
In a further twist, the Football Association (FA) launched a betting probe after allegations surfaced that Coote exchanged messages with a friend in 2019 regarding a Leeds United match against West Bromwich Albion, where he was asked to book Leeds player Ezgjan Alioski.
On Monday, the PGMOL confirmed Coote’s termination, citing a “serious breach of the provisions of his employment contract.”
In a statement, the PGMOL said:
“Following the conclusion of a thorough investigation into Coote’s conduct, his employment with PGMOL has been terminated today with immediate effect.
Coote’s actions were found to be in serious breach of the provisions of his employment contract, with his position deemed untenable.
“Supporting Coote continues to be important to us, and we remain committed to his welfare. Coote has a right to appeal the decision to terminate his employment.”
