After missing seven deadlines, the Port Harcourt Refinery has officially commenced crude oil processing, marking a significant milestone for Nigeria’s energy sector.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) confirmed the refinery’s long-awaited operational start in a message describing the development as a “monumental achievement” for the nation.
“Today marks a new era of energy independence and economic growth for our nation. Congratulations to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the NNPC Board, and GCEO Mele Kyari for their unwavering commitment to this transformative project,” the statement read.
Rehabilitation of the refinery began in 2021 after a $1.5 billion contract was signed with Maire Tecnimont SpA. Despite mechanical completion being announced in December 2023, production was delayed due to extended safety checks and final rehabilitation processes.
This milestone heralds the potential for increased energy security and reduced fuel import dependency, as Nigeria seeks to bolster its refining capacity under Tinubu’s administration.
