Peter Obi Urges Reopening of Onitsha Markets Closed After Drug Raid, Calls for Fairness in Enforcement

Peter Obi

Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has called for the immediate reopening of non-drug markets shut down following the closure of the Head Bridge Drug Market in Onitsha. The drug market, known as Ogbo Ogwu, was sealed last week by regulatory and security agencies over suspected illegal drug activities.

In a post on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday, Obi condemned illicit drug trading and urged the government to prosecute offenders but stressed the need for fairness in enforcing the law.

“I unequivocally condemn such illicit drug trading activities and urge the government to take all necessary measures to eradicate fake drugs and prosecute perpetrators. However, shutting down neighbouring markets not involved, such as Rod, Allied and Tools, Plumbing Materials, Timber, Surgical, and Provision Markets, seems excessive and unjustified,” Obi stated.

He urged authorities to reopen the affected markets, emphasizing the economic hardship their closure was causing for traders and their families.

“The continued closure is severely affecting the livelihoods of millions, especially during this difficult period in our country,” he wrote.

Obi also called for transparency during inspections, urging that store owners be present when their shops are searched to ensure due process.

“Searches should be conducted transparently, with store owners present, and all actions carried out according to the law and due process,” he advised.

Reflecting on his time as Anambra State governor, Obi highlighted his commitment to addressing similar issues with fairness and a focus on protecting livelihoods while upholding the law.
