Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2024 election, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to be transparent about the details surrounding the newly acquired presidential jet and the disposal of the old ones.
In a post shared on his X handle on Tuesday night, August 21, Obi expressed concern over the lack of clarity regarding the new aircraft, which was recently revealed despite earlier denials and mixed messages from the government.
He credited the French court for providing Nigerians with information about the jet’s arrival.
“Now that the jet is here, Nigerian taxpayers, whose money was used for the purchase, deserve to know how much it cost, how old the aircraft is, and how long it has been in operation,” Obi stated.
He also emphasized the importance of disclosing details about the old jets being sold off, including their number, age, and reasons for their disposal.
Obi argued that transparency and accountability should be the foundation of any genuine leadership.
He warned that the federal government risks losing public respect if it fails to provide the necessary information about its leadership decisions, especially those involving public funds.
“A presidential jet is a major symbol of national sovereignty and state power. The cost of transporting the president is a significant issue of public accountability.
I hope that Nigerians will not be denied the right to full disclosure on the new presidential jet,” Obi added.
The Presidency had earlier announced on Monday, August 19, that it had acquired an Airbus A330 business jet, which was used to convey the President to France on the same day.
