PDP Acting Chairman Damagum: “Kwankwaso Owes His Political Success to PDP”

The Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Iliyasu Damagum, has reminded Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former Kano State governor and presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), of the pivotal role the PDP played in his political journey.

Speaking during an interview with BBC Hausa Service on Tuesday, Damagum emphasized that no other party has shaped Kwankwaso’s political career like the PDP, which he credited for nurturing and contributing significantly to his rise in politics.

Addressing Kwankwaso’s recent criticisms of the PDP, Damagum dismissed claims that the party is losing its relevance, asserting that the PDP remains resilient despite challenges. “When he left the party in 2015, despite the difficulties, the PDP was not ‘dead.’ If we could survive his exit then, why would anyone think we are irrelevant now?”

He further stated, “Kwankwaso owes much of his political success to the PDP. We still hold hope that he might return to the party to help address the injustices of the current government.”

Damagum questioned the impact of Kwankwaso’s move to another party, highlighting that the PDP remains the only party capable of winning elections without holding federal power. “Senator Kwankwaso may have left, but how many states has his new party won? The facts speak for themselves.”
