Passengers Flee onto Plane Wing after American Airlines Engine Fire

American Airlines passengers were forced to evacuate onto the wing of the plane at Denver International Airport after the plane’s engine caught fire on Thursday evening, March 23. Thick black smoke poured into the air as emergency crews rushed to the scene.

According to reports, American Airlines Flight 1006, a Boeing 737-800 from Colorado Springs to Dallas-Fort Worth, made an emergency landing in Denver around 5:15 p.m. local time after the crew reported engine vibrations, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported.

The pilot initially assured air traffic controllers that the flight was not in distress.

“We just have a high engine vibration, so we are cruising slower than normal,” the pilot informed air traffic controllers over the radio.

But after touching down, events became dramatic when somebody quickly called, “Mayday, Mayday, Mayday! Engine fire!”

The plane, which had six crew members and 172 passengers, landed at gate C38 before the fire was extinguished.

Images captured at the scene show dozens of passengers on the wing of the plane as thick smoke filled the air.

Twelve travelers were transported to the hospital with minor injuries, the Denver Fire Department said.

American Airlines praised its staff, airport employees, and first responders for their rapid response in a statement.

“We thank our crew members, DEN team, and first responders for their quick and decisive action with the safety of everyone on board and on the ground as the priority.”
