The Pan-African Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Forum 2024, set for November 5-6, will bring together key leaders and innovators under the theme, “The Carbon Market: Driving Investments for a Sustainable Africa.” This year’s forum emphasizes the role of carbon markets in fostering sustainable growth, uniting influential organizations such as the Africa Carbon Market Initiative (ACMI), Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Stanbic IBTC, WACOT Rice, British American Tobacco (BAT), Nigeria Climate Innovation Center (NCIC), and others in a collaborative push toward sustainability.
Odiri Erewa-Meggison, ESG Forum Technical Committee chairman and External Affairs director at BAT West and Central Africa, highlighted the significance of the forum at this juncture, noting, “The Pan-African ESG Forum is a pivotal platform for the African private sector. It’s commendable to see many African organizations prioritizing ESG at the heart of their operations.” Echoing this sentiment, TGI Group’s Head of Corporate Communications, Rafiat Gawat, shared that WACOT Rice and the broader TGI Group are dedicated to responsible sourcing and are excited to partner with the ESG Forum, envisioning the carbon market as a vital opportunity for sustainability across Africa.
Stanbic IBTC’s Head of Sustainability, Tosin Leye-Odeyemi, described the carbon market as the “next frontier” for Nigeria and Africa, highlighting the shift in companies’ sustainability perspectives. Additionally, Abbas Agbaje, Managing Consultant at ImpactCrest, stressed the importance of operationalizing the carbon market with integrity and transparency, crucial for realizing Africa’s environmental and economic goals.
The 2024 Pan-African ESG Forum aims to drive collaboration within the private sector toward a more sustainable future for Africa. It will showcase the transformative potential of the carbon market in fostering sustainable investments, strengthening Africa’s position within the global carbon marketplace, and inspiring innovative strategies for long-term sustainability across the continent.
