Tension has escalated in Osun State as some chairmen and councillors elected during the October 15, 2022, local government elections forcefully resumed office and took over secretariats across 14 local government areas on Wednesday. This action comes despite Governor Ademola Adeleke’s directive on Monday, warning against any occupation of the secretariats following violent clashes between political groups.
The returning officials, who are members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), cited the February 10, 2025, Court of Appeal verdict as justification for their takeover. However, the ruling has been interpreted differently by both parties, leading to fresh tensions.
Osun Assembly Declares Action Unlawful
Reacting to the development, the Osun State House of Assembly condemned the APC-led takeover as illegal and a violation of the rule of law. Addressing journalists on Wednesday, Speaker Hon. Adewale Egbedun accused APC members of forcefully breaking into the secretariats, describing the move as a direct attack on democracy and public order.
“Even more disturbing is the fact that security agencies, who are meant to uphold the law, were present while these illegal acts were being carried out. This is unjust, unlawful, and unacceptable. Law enforcement agencies must never be seen aiding and abetting criminal activities,” Egbedun stated.
Call for Immediate Eviction and Prosecution
The Osun Assembly has now called on the Inspector General of Police to evict all illegal occupants from the local government secretariats and ensure their arrest and prosecution. Egbedun stressed that Governor Adeleke’s directive applied to all parties, adding that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) complied with the order to maintain peace and stability.
“All political actors must desist from unconstitutional acts and seek legal redress rather than resorting to intimidation, force, or violence,” the Speaker warned.
Upcoming LG Election Remains Valid
Reaffirming the February 22 local government elections, Egbedun urged eligible voters to turn out in large numbers and exercise their democratic rights freely.
