Two NYSC members are presently internet sensation following a video that captured them dancing around the purchase of live chickens as they celebrated their newly increased allowance of N77,000.
In a TikTok video by @thankie88, the corps members were spotted returning from a local market, grinning from ear to ear with their pride evident as they paraded their purchase—live chickens and several tubers of yam.
Their joy was evidently visible as they raised the products in the air, chattering merrily as they walked back home.
The Nigerian government had, just a short while back, sanctioned an increase in NYSC members’ pay, from their erstwhile N33,000 monthly stipend to their present N77,000.
In the video going viral, the two could be seen laughing and enjoying the experience as someone passersby commended them on their purchase.
This notwithstanding, the video has been attracting varied responses on social media.
@Zekiel tweeted, “That chicken and yam now, half of the money don finish.”
@YAHWEH’S DELIGHT wrote, “Omo, alawi money don finish like this. Chicken 12k or 10k and yam 4k or 5k.”
Nostalgic for the bygone era stipend, @Maximus-Pedro wrote, “We were the last set of corpers to be paid N9,500 in 2010.”
Not everyone was laughing, though. @akintoyeakinwale3 wrote, “That’s why the world will never take us seriously… so chicken is their priority? The government knows how to handle Nigerians.”
While @Elizabeth from Barcelona had a gloomier outlook: “People who don’t plan ahead. Once NYSC is over, it’ll be like you just lost your job.”
