NUPRC Unveils Decarbonisation Template for Upstream Oil Sector, Mandates Compliance by 2025

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has introduced the Upstream Petroleum Decarbonisation Template (UPDT), a regulatory requirement for issuing licenses and permits starting January 2025. This initiative aligns with Nigeria’s commitment to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2060 and aims to integrate sustainability into upstream oil and gas operations.

In a statement issued Tuesday, Commission Chief Executive Gbenga Komolafe highlighted that the UPDT is anchored in the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021, specifically Section 6 provisions that mandate the promotion of sustainability in the sector.

“The UPDT strengthens Nigeria’s Decarbonisation and Sustainability Agenda, ensuring the competitiveness of the upstream oil and gas sector while attracting investments amidst the global energy transition,” Komolafe stated.

The regulatory framework underscores the NUPRC’s role in the technical, commercial, and operational oversight of Nigeria’s upstream oil and gas operations, enhancing compliance with global climate and energy transition objectives.
