The Kwara State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has intensified efforts to enhance the safety of students, teachers, and host communities across the state.
As part of this initiative, the Ilorin West Division of the NSCDC organized a one-day security summit themed “School Safety and Emergency Response Tips: Citizens’ Security.” The event aimed to reinforce grassroots security measures and address rising threats such as kidnapping, cultism, bullying, drug abuse, and other forms of violence in school environments.
Speaking at the summit, Ilorin West NSCDC Divisional Officer Muhammed Hamzat emphasized the need to strengthen security frameworks to safeguard schools and their surrounding communities.
In his keynote address, Kwara State NSCDC Commandant Dr. Umar Muhammed reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to implementing the federal government’s Safe School Initiative. He stressed the importance of a collective approach involving government agencies, educational institutions, and community leaders to mitigate security risks.
“The safety of our children, teachers, and school communities is a shared responsibility. This summit provides practical strategies to enhance school security and emergency response mechanisms,” he stated.
Umar urged school administrators, teachers, students, and parents to actively support security policies, emphasizing intelligence sharing, vigilance, and adherence to security protocols as crucial measures in preventing security breaches.
Community leaders, including the Balogun Alanamu of Ilorin, Dr. Abubakar Jos, and Dr. Adekola Abdulazeez of Al-Hikmah University, also highlighted the importance of collaboration between schools, communities, and security agencies. They called for increased surveillance, early warning systems, and policy-driven security awareness to create a safer learning environment.
