NNPCL Clarifies Port Harcourt Refinery is Fully Operational, Dismissing Shutdown Claims

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has reassured the public that the Port Harcourt Refinery is fully operational, refuting reports suggesting it had been shut down.

The refinery, which boasts a production capacity of 60,000 barrels per day (bpd), resumed operations in November 2024 following extensive rehabilitation efforts. NNPCL confirmed that the refinery is now playing an important role in bolstering local fuel supply.

Recent reports from The PUNCH raised concerns about a potential shutdown of the refinery on December 13, 2024, citing the observation of fewer trucks at the refinery’s yard, which led to speculation that petrol loading operations had come to a halt. However, NNPCL quickly addressed these concerns.

Olufemi O. Soneye, NNPCL’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, responded to the claims, emphasizing that they were completely unfounded. According to Soneye, the refinery continues to operate without interruption and that fuel loading operations are ongoing as planned.

Soneye stated, “The attention of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has been drawn to reports in a section of the media alleging that the Old Port Harcourt Refinery which was re-streamed two months ago has been shut down.

“We wish to clarify that such reports are totally false as the refinery is fully operational as verified a few days ago by former Group Managing Directors of NNPC. Preparation for the day’s loading operation is currently ongoing.”
