The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPC Ltd, has denied an explosion at the Port Harcourt Refining Company, PHRC, in Rivers State, requesting the public and the media to disregard the report.
In a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja, NNPC Ltd Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, described the incident at the refinery as a flare event, which has been completely contained.
“There is no danger or health hazard to staff, the surrounding communities, or the environment,” the statement assured.
NNPC Ltd confirmed that all reports suggesting that there was an explosion at the refinery are completely untrue and misleading.
The explosion rumors at PHRC came after two single incidents in Rivers State a Bodo, Gokana Local Government Area Trans-Niger Pipeline (TNP) explosion and an explosion at the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area oil complex. The two incidents created fears of potential militant activities amid ongoing political tensions in the state.
