Nnamdi Kanu Pleads Not Guilty to New Terrorism Charges, Apologizes in Court

Nnamdi Kanu

Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has pleaded not guilty to new terrorism charges lodged against him by the federal government in the Federal High Court in Abuja, as reported by Gistreel.

During re-arraignment on Friday, Kanu was accused of:

  • Engaging in terrorism acts
  • Running an unlawful radio station
  • Calling for Nigeria’s dissolution

The federal government’s lead counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), expressed his willingness to prosecute the case and applied for an adjournment to get witnesses ready for a speed-up hearing.

The defense counsel to Kanu, Kanu Agabi (SAN), did not oppose the application. Therefore, Justice James Omotosho adjourned the trial to April 29, May 2, and May 6, 2025.

Unlike during his court appearance on February 10—where he lashed out at the trial—Kanu was composed this time. Through his lawyer, Agabi (SAN), he made a public apology to key legal actors in his matter.

“I hereby apologise to Justice Binta Nyako; she did not deserve the unjustified attack. I also apologise to Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN); he deserves the highest respect,” the apology stated.

Kanu had previously objected to being tried by Justice Binta Nyako, who had initially been withdrawn from the case on September 24, 2024, before being reinstated later. The objection led to Chief Judge John Tsoho reassigned the case to Justice Omotosho on March 4, 2025.
