NMA Issues 21-Day Ultimatum to UNIUYO Over Doctors’ Welfare, Threatens Indefinite Strike

The Akwa Ibom State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) issued the University of Uyo management a 21-day ultimatum and threatens to go ahead with an indefinite strike if the management does not address matters concerning doctors’ welfare and emoluments within the next 21 days.

Speaking after Wednesday’s emergency meeting in Uyo, NMA Chairman Dr. Aniekan Peter expressed frustration that the university did not tackle matters despite long negotiation. A communiqué by the Chairman, Dr. Peter, and Assistant Secretary, Dr. Unyime Ndoh, blamed the Prof. Nyaudoh Ndaeyo-led management, Vice Chancellor for neglecting the welfare of medical lecturers and causing a brain drain to foreign countries such as the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and Saudi Arabia.

Key Demands

The NMA listed some of the grievances as follows:

  1. Failure to transfer medical lecturers to the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) despite UNIUYO Governing Council approval.
  2. Failure to pay arrears since 2016, in contrast to other federal universities that already have the CONMESS structure in place.
  3. Gross under-staffing of doctors and medical lecturers in the university health centre, resulting in an excessive workload.
  4. Delayed promotion for medical lecturers, with lost wages.
  5. Unpaid salaries of three and a half months due to the 2022 ASUU strike, when other medical schools were paid.

Ultimatum and Threat of Strike

  1. The NMA demanded that in 21 days, the UNIUYO management must:
  2. Upgrade all medical lecturers to CONMESS and pay their arrears.
  3. Deploy additional medical lecturers and doctors to the university health centre.
  4. Regularly promote long-overdue lecturers and clear their promotion arrears.
  5. Clear the arrears for the three and a half months’ salaries to be paid to medical lecturers.

Overlooking these demands, the association threatened, would attract an indefinite strike effective immediately.

The NMA leadership also expressed readiness to negotiate with the university administration within the 21-day time frame from April 2, 2025 to bring an end to the crisis.
