Nigeria’s Political Landscape Set for Intense Activity in 2025

The year 2025 marks the mid-term of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, alongside other elected officials from the 2023 general election, setting the stage for heightened political activity across the country. As the penultimate year before the primaries for the 2027 general elections, 2025 is poised to witness political realignments, defections, and extensive consultations by aspirants aiming for electoral positions or re-elections. These developments are expected to shape Nigeria’s political space significantly.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled the Anambra State Governorship election for November 8, 2025. Party primaries are slated to take place between March 20 and April 10, while public campaigns will officially run from June 11 to November 6, 2025.

The 19 registered political parties are anticipated to commence the sale of nomination forms and other preparatory activities ahead of the primaries. Additionally, INEC is set to conduct by-elections to fill six existing vacancies in the National Assembly, including four in the House of Representatives and two in the Senate.

These vacancies include the Ovia North East/Ovia North West federal constituency in Edo State, following the election of Hon. Dennis Idahosa as Edo Deputy Governor, as well as seats left vacant by the deaths of Hon. Ekene Adams (Kaduna), Olaide Akinyemi, Musiliudeen Akinremi (Oyo), and Isah Dogonyaro (Jigawa). 2025 is shaping up to be a pivotal year in Nigerian politics, with developments likely to influence the trajectory of the 2027 general elections.
