Nigerian Woman Laments After ‘Handsome Thief’ Scams Her on First Date

A Nigerian woman has taken to social media to express her disappointment after being scammed by a man she met online.

She shared her experience on X (formerly Twitter). According to her, she came across a guy on Instagram, whom she agreed to go out with. When they were in, the man claimed he was experiencing bank problems and insisted she pays for their ₦47,000 meal, promising to pay her back the next day. He also asked for ₦10,000 cash to buy fuel, justifying this by saying he was having banking problems.

The evening had turned out more surprisingly than that when his companion turned up at the restaurant to meet them and ordered a separate dish. As payment time came, her date grew suspicious suddenly and displayed his phone to her, claiming that his banking application wasn’t responding. Not wishing to be embarrassed, she settled up, expecting that he would reimburse her in due course.

But days went by without repayment. When she contacted him to follow up, he made excuses for repairing his bank problems. Within a week, she found out that he had blocked her everywhere.

Angered by the experience, she mockingly referred to him as a “handsome thief,” confessing that she had been fooled by his good appearance.

The post soon went viral online. Users began commenting in the post, flooding the section with responses-they shared similar experiences and told others to beware.
