Nigeria Inaugurates E-Sports Federation to Boost Youth Engagement and Economic Growth

In a landmark development for Nigeria’s sports industry, the Nigeria E-Sports Federation was officially inaugurated yesterday in Abuja. The event marked a significant step toward leveraging digital gaming to empower youth and contribute to the country’s economy.

The Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Malam Shehu Dikko, expressed enthusiasm about the federation’s establishment, emphasizing the transformative potential of e-Sports. He noted that over 46 million Nigerians are actively engaged in e-Sports, underscoring its vast opportunities for youth development and economic contribution.

E-Sports as a Catalyst for Growth

Speaking at the event, Director-General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, highlighted the role of e-Sports in engaging Nigeria’s youth in the digital era.

“E-Sports is a platform that energizes our young people and encourages their ability to thrive in the digital space,” he stated.

Olopade also acknowledged the challenges faced in establishing the federation, revealing that the process took nearly five years. However, he stressed that this achievement would further position sports as a major contributor to Nigeria’s GDP.

He further noted that sports play a crucial role in job creation and youth empowerment, citing his past experiences as Ogun State’s Commissioner of Sports, where similar initiatives improved community welfare.

Federation’s Strategic Plans

The newly appointed President of the Nigeria E-Sports Federation, Yahaya Maikori, outlined the federation’s next steps.

“Our first step is to collaborate with state governments to establish associations that will serve as points of contact for implementing our strategies,” Maikori stated.

He also announced plans to engage with international e-Sports organizations to enhance training, competitions, and overall development within Nigeria.

A New Era for Nigerian E-Sports

The establishment of the Nigeria E-Sports Federation is expected to reshape the nation’s sporting landscape, providing a structured platform for gaming enthusiasts while positioning Nigeria as a key player in the global e-Sports industry.

With strategic partnerships and sustained development, stakeholders remain optimistic that e-Sports will drive economic growth, create employment opportunities, and offer Nigerian youth a new avenue for success in the digital age.
