The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has announced the transfer of regulatory oversight of Niger State’s electricity market to the Niger State Electricity Regulatory Commission (NSERC). This development was disclosed on NERC’s verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Friday.
Niger State becomes the ninth state to implement the Electricity Act 2023, signed into law 18 months ago by President Bola Tinubu. The transfer aligns with the provisions of the Constitution and the amended Electricity Act, empowering states to regulate electricity markets within their jurisdictions.
Despite the transfer, NERC retains its role as the central regulator, overseeing inter-state and international generation, transmission, supply, trading, and system operations in accordance with the Electricity Act.
