Mysterious Death of Police Inspector Sparks Controversy in Ondo State

In a disturbing turn of events, the Ondo State Police Command has launched an investigation into the mysterious death of Inspector Yusuf Suleiman Blessing, whose passing has raised serious questions and conflicting accounts.

Inspector Blessing, who hailed from Ikoro-Ekiti in Ekiti State and was stationed at Akotogbo in Ondo’s Irele local government area, reportedly died under suspicious circumstances on January 27, 2025.

The case took an unsettling twist when his wife, residing in Osi community, Akure North, received conflicting information about her husband’s fate. According to his wife, after failing to reach him for 24 hours, she received a call from the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) claiming her husband had drowned.

However, what followed next deepened the mystery. When three policemen delivered her husband’s remains in a coffin to the community, they unexpectedly fled when asked to open it.

Upon inspection, the family made a shocking discovery – the body showed signs of burning and had a cracked skull, contradicting the drowning narrative. The Ondo State Police Command, through their spokesperson Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, has offered a different version of events.

According to their statement released today, Inspector Blessing was last seen at the station wearing a blue vest and green tracksuit trousers. When he couldn’t be located, the DPO initiated a search operation. Two days after his disappearance, the Police Marine unit discovered a body face-down in a river, later identified as Inspector Blessing.

The police claim his clothes were intact, with no signs of violence except for swelling in the center of his head. In response to the growing controversy, the Commissioner of Police has ordered a full autopsy. However, this has led to another point of contention – while the police pushed for an autopsy to determine the cause of death, the family strongly opposed it, demanding the immediate release of the body for burial.

The police statement notably contradicts the family’s account, asserting there were “no marks of burnt or physical violence” on the body when it was discovered, effectively dismissing claims of arson.
