Mohamed Salah scored as Egypt won comfortably 2-0 against Ethiopia in their 2026 World Cup qualifier on Friday. Zizo added a second goal, giving the Pharaohs a dominant five-point lead at the halfway stage of Group A. Mohamed Salah netted as Egypt cemented their dominance at the Group A summit of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The Pharaohs opted for a 2-0 win over Ethiopia on Friday evening at Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca because Ethiopia was unable to stage on home soil. Captain Mohamed Salah played one for the ages, scoring the first and setting up the second.
Salah ended the stalemate in the first half, taking advantage of a lightning-fast counterattack to put Egypt in front. Only ten minutes later, the Liverpool star became provider, delivering a pass that allowed teammate Zizo to clinically finish and double Egypt’s advantage.
The Pharaohs controlled possession and had a number of opportunities throughout the match, but were unable to score again in the second half. Trezeguet struck the woodwork, and a late Salah goal was ruled out for offside. Egypt remained calm at the back under head coach Hossam Hassan, achieving a sixth clean sheet in 11 matches since his takeover.
Hassan utilized his bench to the maximum, bringing on the substitutes Mostafa Mohamed, Mohamed Shehata, Mostafa Fathy, Ahmed Nabil Kouka, and Khaled Sobhy to seal the victory. The win sends Egypt on 13 points after five games, five ahead of Burkina Faso and Sierra Leone in Group A.
As the only group winner gets an automatic qualification to the United States, Canada, and Mexico finals, Egypt now sit in a dominant position half-way through qualification. Ethiopia, meanwhile, are winless in their last eight World Cup qualifiers, on three points and with a mountain to climb to stay in the running.
Egypt’s next challenge is on Tuesday, March 25, when they host Sierra Leone at Cairo International Stadium. A victory would leave them in touching distance of their fourth World Cup appearance.
