Nigeria’s Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, has just finished an inspection of medical facilities operated by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. The visit is an indication of the federal government’s determination to improve healthcare services for Nigerian pilgrims in readiness for the 2025 Hajj.
During his tour of NAHCON’s Ummul-Jud office, Minister Pate reaffirmed the government’s determination to keep major health challenges facing pilgrims in check. He stressed that global health stipulations must be met, particularly with recent outbreaks of meningitis and polio.
“Offering credible vaccination certificates, like yellow cards to every Nigerian pilgrim, is a non-negotiable,” Pate stated. He also inspected NAHCON’s fleet of ambulances and assessed the state of medical supplies and equipment readiness in Nigerian clinics in Saudi Arabia.
In a press statement from NAHCON’s Head of Public Affairs, Muhammad Ahmad Musa, areas of concern, particularly the availability of essential drugs, vaccines, and operational ambulances, were identified.
NAHCON Chairman/CEO, Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman, commended the minister’s action as a giant step in improving the commission’s health services. “Your presence boosts confidence in our health delivery and ensures a smoother and safer 2025 Hajj operation,” said Usman.
Against the backdrop of an estimated 70,000 Nigerian Hajj visitors annually, the minister’s personal intervention is a proactive healthcare planning measure. The minister also addressed concerns about climate-related excessive temperatures, with a commitment to institute measures for safeguarding pilgrims’ health.
The unprecedented inspection solidifies the Nigeria Ministry of Health and NAHCON collaboration, and it confirms the federal government’s commitment to providing the best level of medical care to pilgrims.
