Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu gave N10 million cash award to Isioma Sybil Nwosu, the overall best graduating student in Lagos State University (LASU) for the 2023/2024 academic session.
The Faculty of Science Biochemistry graduate, Nwosu, emerged victorious with a resplendent Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.93.
According to Gistreel reports, the news was released on Thursday at LASU’s 28th Convocation Ceremony, which was held at the Buba Marwa Auditorium in Ojo.
The ceremony also featured the conferral of honorary degrees and distinguished professorships on some distinguished Nigerians.
The recipients include Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (retd.), Chairman, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and holder of a Doctor of Humane Letters in Infrastructure, Security, and National Development; and Otunba Olufemi Pedro, former Lagos State Deputy Governor and holder of an honorary degree, a Doctor of Business in Banking, Entrepreneurship, and National Development.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, represented at the event by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, reiterated the commitment of the government to education, which he characterized as the bedrock of progress in society.
“Education is the backbone of our society, and we need to continue celebrating academic success just as much as we celebrate success in entertainment or sports,” he said.
He also renewed the government’s commitment to investing in the state’s tertiary institutions and stated that education remains at the heart of the THEMES+ development agenda.
This includes improving infrastructure, student and staff welfare, and employability through initiatives like the Job Initiative Lagos for final-year students.
LASU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, was hailing the on-going backing by the state government.
43 out of the 44 programmes offered by LASU have been successfully accredited under the most recent assessment, according to a report.
She additionally announced enlargement of postgraduate education under Africa Centre of Excellence for Innovative and Transformative STEM Education, integrating students from around the world, especially international students for the very first time.
During the speech, the university’s Chancellor, Prof. Gbolahan Elias (SAN), charged the graduates to embrace LASU values as they begin new exploits.
“You are not just representing yourselves, your families, your university, and your state,” he said, urging them to be focused and creative.
