Lagos Warns Motorists: Driving Under the Influence of Food, Liquids, or Cigarettes Can Land You in Prison

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) delivered a stern admonition to motorists: smoking, eating, or drinking while driving is not only dangerous—it is illegal.

In a post posted on its official X handle on Wednesday, April 9, LASTMA was reminding individuals that this is an offense punishable under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018.

“Eating, drinking and smoking while driving is an offence under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law 2018,” the agency stated.

LASTMA emphasized that the law is meant to cut down on distracted driving and promote safety on Lagos roads.

Offenders can be treated harshly by way of impounding their vehicles, three months’ imprisonment, or six months’ community service, depending on the court’s decision and type of offence.

“Additional Penalty: Impound vehicle/ Three (3) Months imprisonment or six (6) months community service,” LASTMA concluded in its tweet.

Drivers are encouraged to remain alert on the road and not engage in any activities that may endanger lives.
