Lagos State has taken a significant step toward improving citizen rights and safety by signing five groundbreaking laws, with a particular focus on preventing illegal organ harvesting and strengthening consumer protections.
Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Lawal Pedro, SAN, announced the new legislation during a press briefing on Thursday at the Ministry of Justice in Alausa, Ikeja.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu signed these laws to demonstrate the administration’s commitment to resident welfare and security.
The newly enacted laws include:
– Human Organ and Tissue Transplantation Law
– Consumer Protection Law
– Lagos Enforcement Training Institute Law
– Victims Assistance and Witness Protection Law
– Fire and Rescue Service Law
Pedro emphasized that these laws represent more than legislative milestones, calling them a testament to the government’s dedication to making Lagos “a beacon of progress, justice, and opportunity in Nigeria.”
The Human Organ and Tissue Transplantation Law stands out as a critical measure against unethical medical practices.
It strictly prohibits unauthorized organ harvesting and bans organ sales advertisements. Violations could result in up to 10 years imprisonment or fines reaching ₦10 million.
The Consumer Protection Law emerged as another landmark legislation, empowering residents against unscrupulous business practices.
Businesses violating consumer rights could face severe consequences, including:
– Premises sealing
– Fines up to ₦5 million
– First-time offender penalties of ₦500,000 or six months imprisonment
– Escalating penalties for repeat offenders
“These laws are thoughtfully designed to tackle pressing issues while paving the way for a more just, secure, and prosperous future,” Pedro stated.
The Attorney-General urged Lagos residents to familiarize themselves with these new regulations and actively participate in their enforcement, highlighting the collaborative approach needed to ensure collective welfare and security.
