Dowen College in Lekki has been temporarily closed by Lagos State authorities after staff members were caught illegally dumping waste.
The shutdown was announced Wednesday by Tokunbo Wahab, the state’s Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources.
He said enforcement teams from the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) and Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) carried out the action as part of the government’s zero-tolerance policy on environmental violations.
Wahab shared video footage on social media showing two school employees improperly disposing of waste.
The commissioner said this evidence prompted immediate government intervention.
“This waste was traced to Dowen College in Lekki Phase 1. Such disregard for environmental laws is unacceptable,” Wahab wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
He added that the Corps Marshal of LAGESC received direct orders to seal the school premises.
The commissioner emphasized that Lagos cannot tolerate institutions that ignore basic environmental standards.
Wahab used the incident to send a broader warning to other educational institutions and organizations across Lagos.
He made clear that the state government will continue enforcing environmental laws without exception to protect public health and maintain cleanliness standards.
