The Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) World Bank project has donated 450,000 doses of anthrax vaccines to the Kaduna State Ministry of Agriculture to support the free vaccination of livestock against anthrax and other transboundary animal diseases.
Dr. Salisu Shittu Hashim, the Kaduna State Coordinator of L-PRES, announced the donation in a statement on Monday, commending the Kaduna State Government for providing counterpart funding for the initiative. He noted that L-PRES has trained over 2,000 livestock farmers in disease identification, prevention, and control.
Strengthening Livestock Farming in Kaduna
As part of the project’s broader impact, Governor Uba Sani flagged off the distribution of essential equipment, including fodder choppers, residue crushers, and tricycles, to pastoralist communities and clusters.
Additionally, L-PRES has upgraded four grazing reserves in Kaduna State by installing solar-powered boreholes, reserving land, and supplying feed seeds. Hashim emphasized that these water points will not only reduce farmer-herder conflicts but also enhance milk production in cattle.
The Kaduna L-PRES office has also supported the National Livestock Transformation Programme (NLTP) at the Laduga Grazing Reserve with a baling machine, mower, and other equipment. Furthermore, veterinary services in the state have been strengthened through facility upgrades and training for veterinarians and livestock service providers on disease surveillance.
With these initiatives, L-PRES aims to enhance livestock productivity, strengthen veterinary care, and improve livelihoods for farmers and pastoralists across Kaduna State.
