Judges’ Training Key to Effective Cybercrime Act Implementation, Experts Say

The implementation of the Cybercrime Act 2024 may encounter significant challenges if judges are not adequately trained to handle its intricacies. Judicial workers have emphasized the need for training, citing rapid technological advancements and the Act’s complex provisions. Despite disagreements between the National Judicial Council (NJC) and some lawyers regarding the scope and necessity of such training, the Act mandates a unified legal, regulatory, and institutional framework for combating cybercrime, making judicial capacity-building unavoidable.

Legal experts argue that training in technology and cybercrime should be a priority for Nigerian judges in 2025. While the NJC maintains that there is an annual budget for judicial training, prominent lawyers insist on the importance of consistent training and retraining programs to enhance the nation’s justice delivery system.

They urged the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, to spearhead efforts to equip judges with the skills needed to address the demands of an evolving judicial landscape.
