Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, Registrar of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has called on African countries to invest in building their own artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities rather than relying on foreign-developed technologies. Speaking at the University of Ilorin’s lecture series titled “Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Humanities,” Oloyede stressed that Africa must take an active role in AI development to avoid exploitation and ensure inclusion in the future of global technological advancements.
He urged continental organizations like the African Union (AU) and ECOWAS to lead efforts in creating AI strategies that meet Africa’s unique needs, especially in sectors like healthcare, agriculture, education, and governance. Collaboration on AI research and data sharing across African nations was also encouraged to reduce dependence on foreign technologies.
Oloyede further advocated for the adoption of Hausa sign language as Nigeria’s second national official language and cautioned academics to avoid over-relying on AI without adequate subject knowledge, warning against its potential to mislead.
In addition, the former University of Ilorin Vice-Chancellor highlighted the importance of aligning AI development with ethical and cultural contexts, particularly in fields like Islamic studies and law, ensuring AI respects human rights, values, and Islamic principles.
