Kylian Mbappe has opened up about his prolonged absence from the France national team, revealing that his omission from recent matches was due to decisions made by head coach Didier Deschamps.
The 25-year-old, who joined Real Madrid in the summer and has an impressive 48 goals in 86 appearances for France, last featured for his country in a UEFA Nations League match against Belgium on September 9.
Mbappe addressed the situation in an interview with Canal+, explaining that a mix of personal and professional factors led to his absence. He confirmed that his physical condition and discussions with Deschamps played a role.
Reflecting on the situation, Mbappe said: “My love for the French team hasn’t changed. Yes, I miss it, because it’s been a long time since I’ve been there. In September, I asked the coach not to go. I had just arrived in Madrid and had a super short vacation. The coach insisted that I come, but it didn’t go very well. After that, in October, I was injured. The coach told me it was better not to take me. Then there was November, but I can’t say why I wasn’t called up. It’s the coach’s decision, and I respect it. He’s the boss.”
Deschamps has not revealed specific reasons for Mbappe’s absence but has stated that the forward remains part of his plans for the future.
With no international fixtures until March 2025, Mbappe now has time to focus on his performances with Real Madrid.
