The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has set February 1, 2025, as the official start date for enforcing third-party vehicle insurance across Nigeria. The announcement was made during a visit from the Commissioner for Insurance, National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), Mr. Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
IGP Egbetokun emphasized the importance of complying with Section 68 of the Insurance Act and Section 312 of the 1945 Motor Vehicle (Third Party Insurance) Act, which require all vehicle owners to obtain third-party insurance before operating vehicles on public roads. He warned that violations could lead to imprisonment, fines, or both.
NAICOM’s commissioner also acknowledged the IGP’s achievements and sought the police’s support in ensuring compliance with the insurance law, which offers significant benefits to road users.
