‘If Something Happens to You, Carry Your Cross’—Lagos Gangs Lagos Chief Warns Eyo Portrayal.

The Akinsiku of Lagos, Chief Adebola Dosunmu, disapproves of the portrayal of the Eyo masquerade in the Nigerian film Gangs of Lagos.

In a video that has gone viral, the chief emphasized that Eyo is not intended for movies or gatherings, and that there is a particular process involved. He also disclosed that Lagosians dislike the film and will not tolerate it.

He stated, “Lagosians are unhappy with that film, and we will not tolerate it because it violates our culture and tradition.”

According to the traditional chief, Eyo is intended only for deceased monarchs or chiefs, as well as individuals who have made significant contributions to Lagos.

He explained that there are three varieties of Eyo, namely Osan, Oru, and Gbogbogbo, and that the preparation of Eyo Gbogbogbo, the most common type, takes approximately three months.

In his words, he stated, “Eyo Gbogbogbo refers to the general one, and it will take us roughly three months to prepare. No, it is a taboo for someone to simply don a fila (cap) and other Eyo-related attire and claim to be performing Eyo. It may not be today or tomorrow, but if anything happens, you must carry your cross.”

Chief Dosunmu cautioned that it is forbidden to bring out Eyo without appropriate preparation, as there would be repercussions for doing so.
