The Nigerian House of Representatives has passed a bill that will prevent individuals over 60 years old from contesting the President and Governor seats.
The bill, sponsored by Rep. Ike Ugochinyere, passed its second reading on Thursday, March 27, 2025.
If passed, the bill will amend the 1999 Constitution to provide for an age limit for presidential and gubernatorial aspirants.
That means President Bola Tinubu, Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, and other prominent politicians above 60 would not be eligible to contest the presidency or governorship in upcoming elections.
Presidential and gubernatorial candidates must be below 60 years of age at the time of contesting.
Candidates must possess a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in their chosen professions.
Section 131 and Section 177 of the Nigerian Constitution will be amended to reflect the new qualification requirements.
