Heartbroken Primary School Teacher’s Resignation Letter Sparks Social Media Outcry

A heartfelt resignation letter from a primary school teacher in Enugu has surfaced on social media, igniting a wave of reactions and discussions.

Dated October 2, the letter was addressed to the executive chairman of the Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board (ENSUBEB) and penned by Okoro John, an educator at Central School Opanda in Enugu.

Shared on Facebook by journalist Wisdom Nwedene, the letter unveils the deep sense of regret and disappointment that Okoro John felt about his career in primary education, which he embarked on back in 2017.

In his resignation letter, John lamented the considerable challenges he encountered at Central School Opanda and implied that he could have achieved more if he had chosen a different professional path.

He drew particular attention to the issue of low remuneration, stating that his monthly salary of N43,000 was grossly insufficient to cover basic needs, especially in the face of prevailing economic hardships.

The disgruntled teacher expressed regret over the missed opportunities for personal and professional growth, believing that he could have accomplished more if he had pursued alternative career options instead of dedicating his time to teaching.

The letter reads: “I, Okoro John, who was employed on the 13th day of February, 2017, solemnly wish to resign as a teacher from Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board. I am happy writing this, and I regret being a primary school teacher. If I had started my journey as an apprentice when I began this work, I could have gone far in business. I can’t juggle both work and business, so I’m making way for those who need it.

What can N43,000 do in this type of economic hardship? I need to pay rent, feed my family, build a house, and even buy a car. Please do the needful for others, so that primary school teaching and education can thrive again. Thanks.”

Netizens have responded to the letter with a mix of sympathy, concern, and commentary on the state of education and employment in the region.
