In a stunning admission of vulnerability, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has laid bare the team’s struggles following a devastating 2-1 derby defeat to Manchester United, candidly declaring that he is failing to find solutions to the club’s mounting problems.
The match epitomized City’s current misfortunes. Despite taking an early lead through Josko Gvardiol’s first-half header, the defending champions crumbled in the final moments.
A defensive error by Matheus Nunes gifted United a penalty, which Bruno Fernandes coolly converted, before Amad Diallo delivered the knockout blow with a late winner.
Guardiola‘s post-match press conference was a raw, unfiltered assessment of his team’s predicament. “Something is wrong,” he admitted.
“You can talk about tough schedules or injuries, but the reality is simple – I’m not good enough.”
The typically confident coach showed unusual humility, repeatedly emphasizing his personal responsibility for the team’s alarming slide.
“I’m the manager, and I’m not doing well. That is the truth,” he said, a far cry from his usual tactical bravado.
This crisis comes just months after Guardiola recommitted to the club in November, signing a two-year contract despite sensing difficulties ahead.
Now, those challenges have escalated into a full-blown sporting emergency, with City losing eight of their last 11 matches.
“I knew it would be a tough season, but not this hard,” Guardiola reflected. The team that once played with fluid, effortless brilliance now looks fragmented and uncertain.
Speaking to Sky Sports, he lamented the team’s current style of play: “We are not nice in the way we play. Before it was so fluid, and now we struggle.”
The manager’s stark self-criticism reflects a team in crisis. While refusing to blame individual players, Guardiola made it clear that the responsibility lies squarely on his shoulders. “I want to find a solution desperately,” he said. “I will try again and again.”
