Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has pledged to eliminate Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in the state, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to finding lasting solutions to the ongoing security and humanitarian crises. The governor made this declaration during a meeting with a United Nations delegation led by IOM Chief of Mission Paola Pace and ECHO Head of Office Alexandre Castellano in Makurdi.
Governor Alia highlighted agriculture as a central pillar in rebuilding and empowering displaced populations. “Agriculture is the backbone of Benue’s economy and key to restoring livelihoods for our displaced communities,” he said.
In collaboration with partners, the state government is providing agricultural inputs, training, and resources to displaced persons and host communities to resume farming activities during this cropping season. The initiative aims to ensure food security while fostering economic stability and independence.
“Our efforts, supported by partners like ECHO, are targeted at transforming lives and making IDP camps a thing of the past,” Alia added.
