At the 2024 Beeta Arts Festival (BAF), For Amina, a compelling advocacy film on gender inclusion and female education, set the tone for the event. Starring festival founder Bikiya Graham-Douglas as Boma Ishaya, the film portrays a mother’s unyielding fight against systemic corruption to ensure her daughter’s right to education.
Speaking at the premiere, Graham-Douglas revealed the character was inspired by her late mother, whose unwavering support shaped her children’s futures. Rediscovering shared festival notes with her mother reignited her vision to launch BAF in 2021.
Director Lindsey Efejuku emphasized the film’s focus on accountability, aligning with the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. “One of Nigeria’s biggest issues is the lack of accountability. This film challenges that, urging viewers to recognize their voices can create change,” she stated.
Efejuku further highlighted how For Amina raises awareness about promises of free education that remain unmet. “It’s about exposing the gaps—like families being charged for supposedly free school supplies—and showing the power of one mother’s voice to demand justice.”
In addition to For Amina, the festival showcased 13 other films, covering diverse themes. Efejuku also announced her upcoming projects, including Remi and Nneoma, a modern retelling of the biblical story of Ruth and Naomi set for a 2025 release, and the highly anticipated premieres of Lasgidi Corps and Love Lockdown, both debuting in early 2025.
With its bold themes and resonant messages, For Amina sets a high standard for advocacy storytelling, urging viewers to speak up and take action against societal injustices.
