Five Prisoners Recaptured After Kogi Jailbreak, Seven Others Under Manhunt

Five of the twelve prisoners who escaped in the wee hours of Monday, March 24, 2024, in a jailbreak at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Koton-Karfe, Kogi State, have been recaptured, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has revealed. The prisoners escaped after padlocks were tampered with at one section of the centre, making their escape possible.

After the event, Acting Controller General of Corrections Sylvester Nwakuche rapidly assembled a response team together with security agencies and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Kogi State. Security officers were mobilized to restore order and launch a manhunt for the fleeing prisoners.

Confirmation was made through a statement issued by NCoS spokesperson Abubakar Umar, which stated that five of the escapees had been arrested while the remaining seven are being hunted down.

Acting Controller General responded to the breach in security by directing the total investigation of the circumstances behind the escape. Furthermore, the correctional centres across the nation are undergoing security audits to help ensure that something similar does not occur in the future.

The NCoS, however, calmed the public by stating that it was committed to improving security in custodial facilities and urged citizens to report any suspicious movement that would assist in re-arresting the remaining fugitives.
