The Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Abba Aliyu, has reiterated the federal government’s commitment to ensuring full electricity access across Nigeria by 2030. Speaking on Tuesday during a meeting with Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi and Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal in Abuja, Aliyu emphasized the crucial role of collaboration between the REA and state governments in addressing the country’s energy access challenges.
He noted that these discussions reflect the growing dedication of state leaders to expanding electricity access, strengthening partnerships, and driving nationwide electrification efforts.
“If we maintain this momentum, we will undoubtedly fulfill Mr. President’s vision of achieving 100% electricity access by 2030,” Aliyu stated.
The meeting, which also included Renewable Energy Service Companies (RESCOs), focused on scaling up decentralized renewable energy solutions and implementing cost-effective electrification projects in underserved areas. The governors reaffirmed their commitment to rural electrification and pledged to align state-level energy initiatives with REA’s strategic goals.
Plans were made to improve coordination between the REA and state ministries of power to accelerate project implementation. Emphasis was placed on raising public awareness of renewable energy solutions and involving local communities in project execution. Aliyu also highlighted the importance of leveraging Nigeria’s recent electricity market de-monopolization to attract private-sector investment and promote innovative energy solutions at the state level.
“We are witnessing an era of competitive, subnational-led innovations that will fast-track private-sector investments and energy expansion,” he noted.
He stressed that deepening collaboration among the REA, state governments, and private sector players would not only bridge energy access gaps but also create a sustainable and inclusive energy future for all Nigerians.
“Together, we will deliver universal electricity access and unlock socio-economic opportunities for millions,” Aliyu concluded.
